Since 1963, the New York Film Festival has showcased the latest work from the world's most venerable filmmakers—the likes of Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodóvar and Alain Resnais, to name just a few—and introduced some of the most innovative international talent to New York audiences. This year's edition opens with Roman Polanski's Carnage, based on the hit Broadway show God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza, about two couples (John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet) who meet to talk after their sons are involved in a schoolyard fight. Other gala film screenings include those for My Week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh, about the making of the film The Prince and the Showgirl; David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, the Canadian director’s third collaboration with Viggo Mortensen, about Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud and the (very creepy) birth of psychoanalysis; Pedro Almodóvar’s gender-bending horror-fantasia The Skin I Live In, where Antonio Banderas plays an extremely unscrupulous cosmetic surgeon; and The Descendants by Alexander Payne, in which George Clooney is a Hawaiian real-estate magnate who goes boat-tripping from Oahu to Kauai to meet his wife’s lover (yes, we know—tough work, but somebody’s got to do it).

The 17-day festival, organized by The Film Society of Lincoln Center, also presents classics, a full slate of documentaries and full-length features, Views From the Avant-Garde—the festival's platform for experimental films—and other special events. Other notable films on the docket include Lars von Trier's new sci-fi tear-jerker Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst (pictured above); George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Martin Scorsese’s documentary about the best-dressed Beatle; and Corman’s World, Alex Stapleton’s heartfelt examination of American schlock king Roger Corman. Finally, for those who are fascinated by process, the HBO Films Directors Dialogues series offers compelling discussions with Julia Loktev (The Loneliest Planet), Abel Ferrara (The Bad Lieutenant), Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (the Paradise Lost series of documentaries) and German director Wim Wenders, whose 3D dance film Pina, about choreographer Pina Bausch, is also in the festival.
